Frederick George Scott - Shakespeare

UNSEEN in the great minister dome of time, br Whose shafts are centuries, its spangled roof br The vaulted universe, our master sits, br And organ-voices like a far-off chime br Roll thro' the aisles of thought. The sunlight flits br 5 br From arch to arch, and, as he sits aloof, br Kings, heroes, priests, in concourse vast, sublime, br Glances of love and cries from battle-field, br His wizard power breathes on the living air. br Warm faces gleam and pass, child, woman, man, br 10 br In the long multitude; but he, concealed, br Our bard eludes us, vainly each face we scan, br It is not he; his features are not there; br But, being thus hid, his greatness is revealed.
