According to official figures, 1 in 3 women in Chile experience sexual or physical violence. Meanwhile, in 17 of maternal deaths in the country were the result of clandestine abortions. In one case, an underage girl became pregnant as a result of a rape and was not allowed to have a legal abortion. This case has spurred social movements to demand that the government present legislation decriminalizing abortion.
