Upsurge in Afghanistan violence prompts security shake-up

With the remnants of Saturday's deadly bus blast in Kabul still fresh in their minds, Afghans are on edge.br br Waves of suicide bombings and commando-style assaults by the Taliban further threaten an already fragile security.br br The attacks are spreading uncertainty as most foreign combat troops withdraw this month.br br In a fiery speech on Sunday, President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attacks.br br (SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) AFGHAN PRESIDENT, ASHRAF GHANI, SAYING:br br "These acts are unacceptable; these acts are not Islamic and are inhuman. The society has to say in one voice that it's no longer acceptable."br br His speech comes days after a suicide bombing killed a German man at a French cultural center.br br The man was attending a performance of a play denouncing suicide bombs.br br Ghani said he's seeking to revive an Afghan security body last seen during a Soviet-backed government in the 1980s.
