SYDNEY SIEGE: AUSTRALIANS SHOW SOLIDARITY WITH MUSLIMS
Emotions are running high in Australia following Monday`s hostage siege in a downtown Sydney cafe. There has been widespread commentary online with messages of condolence flooding in for the families of the two people killed along with the hostage taker Iran born asylum seeker Man Haron Monis, a radical Islamist who moved to Australia in 1996. And while it’s a time for reflection, with people paying tribute to the victims, some have also taken to the web to show solidarity with members of the Muslim community.
Thousands have been posting under the #IllRideWithYou hashtag on social media, pledging support to Muslims who are afraid the hostage tragedy will prompt an Islamophobic backlash. The movement was started by a web user who didn’t want to see Muslim’s vulnerable on public transport following Monday`s siege, as being a Muslim in the wake of a terrorist attack can be terrifying. So she volunteered to meet Muslim people at their local stations and then ride with them on their journey into work, to help prevent any form of abuse because of their religious attire. Many Sydney residents have since followed her lead, as we can see from these photos shared on Twitter. 
The wave of solidarity has now spread further afield. Scores of people from Brisbane and Melbourne have also shown support with the Muslim community, offering anyone who needs it, company on public transport.
