Shirley Ross~Like Me a Little Bit Less, Love Me a Little Bit More~1933

Shirley Ross recorded Like Me a Little Bit Less with the Gus Arnheim Orchestra in December 1933 in New York for the Brunswick label. 20 year old Shirley was just beginning her career and these records with Arnheim were her first recordings. Bernice Maude Gaunt was born in Nebraska in 1913 of German heritage but attended Hollywood (CA) High School and UCLA with the goal of becoming a classical pianist. But things never work out as planned. The Arnheim recordings caught the attention of Rodgers and Hart who steered her career to singing when they hired her to sell their music to MGM Studios. That led to a bit part in the movie Manhattan Melodrama with Clark Gable. She was loaned by her studio to Paramount to sing in The Big Broadcast of 1937 and although the film contained numerous big name performers, a movie critic declared that her voice was the sweetest of all. Her next break was to be cast opposite Bob Hope in Waikiki Wedding which led her to be cast opposite Hope in 5 more films. In '38 she was gain cast with Hope in The Big Broadcast of 1938 which was a defining moment for both as their duet Thanks for the Memory became a huge worldwide hit and even produced a spinoff movie of that same name. That movie, in turn, produced another worldwide hit, Two Sleepy People with Hoagy Carmichael. Shirley abruptly retired to care for her dying husband Ken Dolan who passed away in 1951. She remarried Ed Blum, took the name Bernice Blum, moved with him to Menlo Park and led a low key life. She died of cancer in 1975 and her death was only reported in a few local papers because no one but a few close friends knew that Bernice was the famous Shirley Ross of the movies. But Bob Hope and Bing Crosby knew and honored her last rites.
