Opposition groups in Ecuador called for nationwide demonstrations yesterday against President Rafael Correa's decision to impose temporary tariffs on non-essential imports as a way to protect domestic producers. Attendance at the protests fell far short of organizers predictions. Correa charged that the demonstrations were part of a strategy to undermine progressive governments in the region.
