Scientists have found a plausible explanation for why the Earth and moon have similar compositions though the prevailing theory on their creation suggests that they shouldn’t.


For decades people have been generally accepting of the theory that the moon was formed following a collision between baby Earth and a celestial body that hailed from afar. 

In recent times, however, some members of the scientific community have tackled some of the significant inconsistencies in that telling of the tale.

As the commonly held belief goes, billions of years ago a great big speeding space rock called Theia came from another area of the solar system and struck our planet. 

Theia then broke apart and some of the resulting debris from both bodies coalesced to form the moon.
