A Los Angeles-bound commuter train derailed early Tuesday morning after it struck a produce truck that was stopped on the tracks in Oxnard, California, injuring 51 people, at least four critically.

Just before 6:00 a.m. a 55-year-old Arizona man in an F-150 with a 12-foot trailer mistakenly took the railroad tracks for the road and became stuck.

The Metrolink commuter train was traveling at around 79 miles per hour when a conductor spotted the truck on the tracks.

The engineer implemented emergency protocol but could not stop the collision, which derailed three cars and knocked a fourth off the track.

The driver of the truck fled the scene but was located by police a few miles away, Ventura County Fire spokeswoman Margaret Remmen told Reuters.

A total of 51 people were involved in the accident, including passengers, conductors and the driver of the truck.

There were no fatalities but 28 people were taken to six hospitals, some suffering significant head, neck and back traumas or broken bones, according to Steve Carroll, Emergency Medical Services administrator.

Metrolink credits the lack of fatalities to the new Rotem coach cars, which have crush zones and breakaway tables to lessen passenger trauma in the event of a crash.

The crash comes three weeks after a Metro-North commuter train in New York struck a car at a railroad crossing and derailed, killing six people.
