In a town in southwestern Taiwan, police were called to the scene of a crime by a shop over.

The owner, a Ms. Wu, said she caught a woman stealing two pairs of shoes from her shop.

The thief, a Ms. Chen, age 35, said she only tried to steal the shoes out of desperation. She was on her way to a job interview and she had been unemployed for so long that she no longer had a pair of serviceable shoes. Ms. Chen was worried that showing up to a job interview shoeless might lose her the job.

The shop owner said when she caught Ms. Chen she offered to not report her to the police if she would only return the stolen items. So, Ms. Chen returned one of the stolen pairs stashed in her jacket, but claimed she was so guilty and terrified at being caught she’d completely forgotten the other pair hidden in her handbag. But Ms. Wu, the owner, found the second pair and angrily called the police.

The police were sympathetic to the tearful Ms. Chen but as Ms. Wu insisted on pressing charges they had to file the complaint. Ms. Chen has no previous record of shoplifting and unfortunately, she won’t be making her job interview now.
