Six members of a religious cult called "All-powerful spirit", were arrested after a woman was beaten to death in Zhaoyuan, China's eastern province of Shandong on Saturday.

According to the Straits Times, the woman was having dinner at a McDonald's when the suspects, including four members of the same family and two other women, asked for her phone number.

The cult members were apparently gathering numbers in a bid to recruit new members.

When the woman refused to give her phone number, she was attacked and beaten.

According to the Straits Times, the suspects kept kicking her in the head while she was lying on the floor. A video uploaded by an eyewitness online showed a man hitting the victim repeatedly with what looked like a steel mop handle.

According to State broadcaster CCTV, the attackers warned spectators inside the McDonald's to not intervene by saying "We'll kill anyone who gets involved!"

The suspects were still beating the woman when police arrived at the scene.

She died upon arrival at the hospital.

The members of the cult were arrested and charged with intentional homicide.
They all confessed to the crime, the Straits Times reported.

CCTV said religious material had been found at a location linked to the sect, but no further details were given.

The religious cult "All-powerful spirit" reportedly started from Henan province in the early 90s and spread first to other provinces in China, and later to other countries among which the United States, Canada, Malaysia and Indonesia.
