Fifty inmates and 12 officers were killed during a prison break in Iraq Friday night just hours after a car bomb exploded, killing 7 civilians in Baghdad.

ISIS was responsible for the killings and the release of ISIS prisoners," Al-Khalis mayor Oudi Al-Khadran told Reuters.

Al-Khalis prison, in Iraq's Diyala province, holds hundreds of inmates convicted on terrorism charges. A fight broke out between prisoners, which prompted prison guards to respond.

"Then the prisoners attacked them, stripped them of their weapons and started a riot while also managing to capture the armory of the prison," an unnamed police source told Reuters.

At least 50 inmates and 12 officers were killed during the prison riot. 40 inmates were said to have escaped.

The Islamic State claims that they detonated explosives outside the prison according to pro-IS news outlet Amaq News Agency. This has not been confirmed.
