The Peruvian Mine Workers' Federation has called a nationwide strike to demand the repeal of three labor laws that the union says adversely affects its members. The laws allow companies to engage in subcontracting, to lay off 10% of their workforce if they claim financial problems, and to pay 20% of workers' salaries in the form of bonuses to avoid having to provide benefits. Unions from other industries are joining the mine workers' demonstrations. The mine workers, in turn, are also supporting the protests in Tampo Valley against the Tia Maria mining project, which critics charge will substantially damage on the local environment and agricultural production. Area authorities have called for a dialogue for a political solution to resolve the conflict. Rael Mora reports from Lima. teleSUR
