Venezuela’s National Network of Youth and Children’s Orchestras recently celebrated its 40th birthday. Today we speak with one of its most enthusiastic ambassadors, violinist Ron Davies Alvarez, who taught classical music for over four years in an orphanage in Greenland. To get to Greenland from Venezuela, you have to take six planes, a helicopter and a sled, he says. Ron Davies talks about his experience of organizing an orchestra with children from the orphanage and the community. He began with an ensemble of 13 musicians, and the orchestra now has between 60 and 80 children. For the young musician and teacher, music is a channel for serving, helping and transforming children, teenagers, and adults in communities and towns. His dream is to take this experience to the far corners of Africa, Asia and Oceania.
