While studying for college entrance exams, a depressed Miyazaki saw Hakujaden*, fell in love with the heroine, and realized animation’s ability to portray emotion and imaginative worlds. Upon graduating university in political science and economics, Miyazaki decided to work instead as an inbetweener** at Toei-Cine, an animation studio.br br Working at the bottom of the animation ladder, Miyazaki knew he wanted to “send a message of cheer to all those wandering aimlessly through life.
