Slums are home to approximately half of Medellin’s 2.5 million residents. Many are participating in a huge project begun more than a decade ago to create parks, green areas and drainage canals. This green belt will serve as a buffer to contain slum sprawl. Despite some amelioration of living conditions and an increase in the self-confidence of community people, drug gangs are still powerful.
