Inside The Americas - The Rule of Law in Mexico

While the official government discourse in Mexico claims that advances are being made in respect for human rights and the rule of law, critics charge the opposite is the case. Compared to six years ago, during the previous presidential administration, homicides are up 34, kidnappings 200 and extortion 120. Recent neoliberal reforms, rejected by social activists, have led to increased repression. While some legislation has been enacted and the government is sensitive to international pressure, many say the changes are cosmetic.
