Netherlands: ICJ Rules that Nicaragua Violated Costa Rica’s Sovereignt

Costa Rica’s President Luis Guilermo Solis has expressed his satisfaction over the International Court of Justice’s ruling that Nicaragua violated Costa Rica’s sovereign territory by establishing a military presence in parts of a disputed waterway and that it must compensate its neighbor. The Court has also recognized Costa Rica’s sovereignty over a 2.5 square kilometer disputed territory known as Isla Calero on the border with Nicaragua. The ruling is the latest stage in a long running legal battle between the two countries, which have accused each other of territorial violations in the wetlands at the mouth of the San Juan River.
