Nepal earthquake historic Dharahara tower collapses hundreds feared trapped

The architecture of Dharahara was designed in Mughal and European style. It resembled an Islamic minaret. The statue of Hindu deity Shiva was placed on the top of the tower.
During the earthquake of 1834, both towers survived, but the first Bhimsens tower suffered severe damage. A hundred years later, on 15 January 1934, another earthquake completely destroyed the Bhimsens first tower. Only two of the 11 stories on the second tower remained. The then Prime Minister of Nepal, Juddha Shumsher carried out the renovation work of the Dharahara tower to restore it to its previous form. While the original Bhimsen Tower was obliterated, Queen Lalit Tripura Sundaris tower got its name, Bhimsen Stambha or Bhimsen Tower. Use[edit] Dharahara was constructed for the military purpose. It was used as a watchtower. In case some incidents of national importance occurred, bugles used to be blown from the top floor of the tower. This served to herald the message to the army men to assemble on urgent reason by blowing trumpet at the top floor of tower. The tradition of bugle trumpeting was in practice until the collapse of the tower.[1] Destruction[edit] During the earthquake of 1834, both towers survived, but the first Bhimsens tower suffered severe damage. On 25 April 2015, the 2015 Nepal earthquake, with an estimated magnitude between 7.8 and 8.1(Mw), hit the region, leading to the collapse of the tower.[3] The earthquakes epicenter was approximately 29 kilometres (18 mi) east-southeast of Lamjung, Nepal.[2] The structure collapsed and only its base survived.
