POLDARK: REVIEW OF THE OLD AND THE NEW br This is a comparison review of the 1975 Poldark British BBC series with the newer Poldark 2015 production the BBC aired in March 2015 in Britain and in June on PBS in North America. This Cornish saga series is based on the first seven of 12 novels written by Winston Graham about th main character, Ross Poldark, (Robin Ellis 1975,1977) Aiden Turner (2015) a British Army officer, who returns to his home in Cornwall from br the American Revolutionary War only to find that his childhood sweet heart Elizabeth Chynoweth, (Jill Townsend 1975. 1977) Heider Reed(2015) having believed him dead, is about to marry his cousin Francis Poldark. (Clive Francis 1975) (Kyle Soller 2015) Ross attempts to restore his own fortunes by reopening one of the family's derelict tin mines. But struggles financially against the new commercial and banking practices. After several years he marries Demelza Carne,(Angharad Rees 1975,1977) (Eleanor Tomlinson 2015) a poor servant girl that he takes in from the streets. Poldark gradually reconciles to the loss of Elizabeth's love but it haunts him throughout his marriage to Demelza who proves to be more than a match for him. who turns out to be his true love. After his cousin Francis dies, Elizabeth later marries George Warleggan, (Ralph Bates 1975, 1977) (Jack Farthing 2015) Ross's nemisis. It is what Warleggen represents that creates the problem. The destruction of the old agarian and feudal ways, which Ross Poldark himself fights against, but it is the lack of responsibility to ones fellow man and the social devastation upheaval and poverty that the new ways create that provide the turmoil and conflict for our main character Ross Poldark. br While more theatrical, the old Poldark still stands up to time, the new Poldark is far more scenic.
