Burgundy Street Blues - Carel Wijnand 2007

Burgundy Street Blues – Carel Wijnand 2007 br At the reunion party of our 1952-53 Black Bottom Jazz Band in September 2007 in Bussum, the Netherlands we are here featuring clarinetist Carel Wijnand. Already in the early days Carel liked to play George Lewis’ Burgundy Street Blues. Carel phoned me when I was still at home in Canada and I sorted out the chord structures of this relatively simple sounding blues. However there are some 4 different chord sequences that every one in the rhythm group should be aware of. Ari van Mensvoort who normally plays with the Midlife Traditional Jazz Band told me that he was totally familiar with the tune since their clarinet player plays this tune as well. br Carel who had picked up playing again in the late nineties after an absence of more than 30 years because of serious moneymaking commitments in North Africa had not forgotten about his beloved blues. He performs it here with with incredible flavour matching the recordings of old George Lewis from New Orleans. It became one of the highlights of our day’s session. br Wim de Vries bass, Rob Herwig piano and Ari van Mensvoort banjo are the superb back-up team.
