TRONDHEIM, NORWAY — The U.S. military is stockpiling tanks and artillery in a series of Cold War-era caves in central Norway, in response to renewed tension between NATO and Russia.

The caves are situated in the Trondheim region of central Norway.

The U.S. has a total of six caves and two airfields, or more than 700,000 square feet of facilities in Norway, the Washington Post reported.

Under an expanded agreement, the caves — which were mothballed following the end of the Cold War — will now play host to M1 Abrams battle tanks, amphibious assault vehicles and Humvee gun trucks. Enough equipment to support 15,000 troops.

The U.S. also announced last week it will send 6 F-15 aircraft to Finland this spring for military exercises taking place near the border with Russia.

The deployment comes at a time of increased tension with Russia following its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and worries about increased Russian military activity in eastern Ukraine.
