Georgia marks anniversary of 5-day war with South Ossetia

Georgia commemorated the eighth anniversary of its five-day war with South Ossetia on Monday (August 8).br br Georgia’s prime minister laid a wreath at a memorial at the Mukhetgverdi Military Cemetery. br br Georgia invaded South Ossetia on the night from August 7 to 8, 2008. Moscow intervened to defend South Ossetian civilians, many of whom held Russian passports, and to expel the Georgian forces.br br Over a thousand people, including 72 Russian servicemen, lost their lives in the brief conflict.br br South Ossetia also held events to pay tribute to those killed during the armed conflict.
