It was the fourth of the Five Dynasties. It was among the shortest-lived of all Chinese regimes, lasting for slightly under four years before the state collapsed following a rebellion that resulted in the founding of the Later Zhou dynasty. br br The Later Han was among the shortest-lived regimes in the long history of China. Emperor Gao Zu (real name: Liu Zhi Yuan) died the year following the founding of the dynasty, to be succeeded by his teenage son, Liu Cheng You (also known by his posthumous name - Emperor Yin). br br The new teenage emperor was suspicious of Guo Wei, a Han Chinese who served as the Assistant Military Commissioner at the court of the Later Han. br br The teenage emperor's reign was marked by arbitrary killing of his important ministers, and it eventually led to his own downfall. When he killed the entire family of General Guo Wei in 951 AD, Guo's army led a military revolt & attacked the capital. br br Guo Wei now declared himself emperor of the new Later Zhou dynasty. The Later Zhou was the last in a succession of five dynasties that controlled most of northern China during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era, which lasted from 907 to 960 AD and bridged the intervening gap between the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. br br Rule of Guo Wei br br Guo Wei, posthumously known as Emperor Taizu of Later Zhou, was the first Han Chinese ruler of northern China since 923 AD. He is regarded as an able leader who attempted reforms designed to alleviate burdens faced by the peasantry. His rule was vigorous and well-organized. However, it was also a short reign. His death from illness in 954 AD ended his three-year reign.
