Mysterious rising bubbles have been spotted in the waters off Whalers Bay in Kaikoura, a week after the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the area on November 14.

Two Kaikoura Kayakers tour guides were out paddling when they made the unusual discovery on November 21. Matt Foy told Storyful that they had never seen the waters bubble prior to the quake, and that the sea temperature appeared warmer and that there was a “sulphuric smell.”

TVNZ interviewed- Dr Matthew Hughes, of Canterbury University, to help demystify the phenomenon. Hughes said the bubbles were likely due to the quake exposing new cracks in the seabed and releasing gas to surface.
