2028 Games not an option for Paris, says bid chief

The Paris Olympic bid chief said on Tuesday (March 21) that the French capital was only bidding for the 2024 Olympic Games and 2028 was not possible. br br "It is now or never," three-times Olympic canoeing champion Tony Estanguet told Reuters. "This is the last chance to see Paris bidding for the Games." br br Paris is up against Los Angeles for the right to stage the 2024 sports extravaganza. The city has bid, and failed, three times before in 1992, 2008 and 2012. br br International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach has hinted he would not be against awarding those Games and the 2028 Games at the same time, and said last week the IOC Executive Board had agreed to set up a working group to explore potential changes to the process and report back in July. br br The 2024 host city will be awarded at a vote in Lima, Peru, in September. br br Officials from both bid cities have said they are focused on the 2024 edition and are not looking beyond that. br br Estanguet strengthened the French stance on Tuesday. He said that land earmarked for buildings such as the Olympic village would not be available in Paris in 2028, venues have been built or improved for 2024 and political guarantees and support are only in place for 2024. br br "I can just tell you that Paris is only possible for '24," Estanguet said.
