Men wanting to get rid of gray hair have a wealth of quick and effective options, but, according to recent research, those silver strands may be linked to a health matter that’s not so easy to erase.
The study suggests there is a correlation between men’s whitening locks and an increased risk of heart disease.
For investigative purposes, the study gathered coronary CT scans from 545 men who were deemed likely to be suffering from heart-related maladies.
Those readings were then assessed according to the individuals’ actual coronary conditions and percentages of white hair strands versus dark ones.
Data on known cardiovascular risk factors was also collected and utilized.
According to a press release about the study, higher quantities of gray hair were, “associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease independent of chronological age and established cardiovascular risk factors.”
Further, “Patients with coronary artery disease had a statistically significant higher” gray percentages and, “higher coronary artery calcification than those without coronary artery disease.”
Dr. Irini Samuel, one of the researchers, noted, “Atherosclerosis and hair greying occur through similar biological pathways and the incidence of both increases with age. Our findings suggest that, irrespective of chronological age, hair greying indicates biological age and could be a warning sign of increased cardiovascular risk."
