How Can I Improve the Appearance of My Neck ? | Aviva Preminger, MD

For more information br br People always ask me how they can improve the appearance of their neck. And it's a common complaint but I think that the response actually depends on what the problem is so there are a number of factors at play. Some people just have extra skin in this area and so we're looking at skin tightening. If it's just skin tightening, we have non-invasive and more invasive techniques. The common non-invasive technique that's been shown to be really effective at this point is Ulthera, which is an ultrasound based technology that actually helps your body build its own collagen. There's no anesthesia involved, and no downtime in the procedure and your body builds collagen over time resulting in skin tightening over about 90 days. For patients who have more extensive laxity or loose skin in this area are often looking at a surgical solution like a necklift or a facelift and commonly combine the two. Some patients just have fat in the in the neck area and these days we have a lot of non-invasive procedures to address that area such as CoolSculpting. There's something called the cool mini which is a special hand piece specifically designed to address extra fat of the area under the chin. There's also an FDA approved injectable called Kybella which is an acid that we inject; it’s not painful and basically it dissolves the fat under the chin area. So both of these are really effective, non-invasive treatments. br br We also have liposuction which suctions out the fat and permanently removes it. I often like to combine this with a laser smart lipo or laser liposuction which really helps with skin contraction as well. And then the traditional facelift actually is often combined with direct fat removal or suctioning of the fat with liposuction and it really addresses all of the components that are really concerning to patients so you're excising the extra skin and you're also removing the fat. And the last thing that's addressed is the muscle. So one of the things you want to do is there's a thin muscle in the and we will actually tighten that muscle at the time of a facelift Some patients have what's called platysmal bands which are these finger-like projections that are really obvious almost like strings when the patient grimaces or makes kind of a bad face. And those can just be addressed by Botox injections in the office. So as you can see, we have a wide variety of techniques available and they really depend on what the specific concerns are. So we can have a conversation about what the options are and really tailor a plan to address the specific concerns of the patient. We have so much at our disposal these days, so it’s really fantastic.
