As temperatures peak at over 35 degrees Celcius in southern France today, a huge holiday maker switch is taking place causing traffic jams lasting hours. Traditionally the busiest weekend of the year on the roads, it is known as the chassé croisé, when those who take their holidays in July cross with those who holiday in August. But at least it’s expected, so people can bravely prepare for the worst.

In a service station most people were coping very well, just resigned to the fact that things would take a little longer.

Motorists are advised if at all possible to avoid travelling, but if you must, make sure your car is serviced, bring plenty of water and take lots of breaks to stay safe.
