The mochi you display is called Kagami mochi (鏡餅mirror mochi), and consists of 2-3 layers of round mochi cakes stacked on top of each other. The traditional method of making mochi is pounding mochi rice with a giant wooden mallet. However, the days of technology are upon us and now the modern method of making mochi is using a rice cooker!
