It has a long spherical body, rounded at the ends, with an endoskeleton just below its skin. They can be found deep on the ocean floor at depths greater than 5 miles. They travel in dense herds where over 1,000 can be found per square yard, and at deeper depths these herds make up 90 of the total ocean biomass at depth. They are scavengers and often feed on debris, plankton, and other organic matter and can grow up to a 10 feet long. Some position themselves in currents and catch food as it is carried by.\rbr\rbr6 – Wolffish - The Wolffish, also known as Sea Wolves, is a large marine cold water fish, native to the North Atlantic and Pacific oceans, from the Scandinavian coast to Cape Cod to the Mediterranean. Like catfish, they are bottom feeding fish who can swim to depths of up to 2,000 feet. Like humans, they have canine and molar teeth, and they use their strong jaws to break open and eat hard shelled invertebrates, like crustaceans and clams. These fearsome teeth also keep them on top of the food chain, with few known natural predators. They can grow over 6 feet in length.\rbr\rbr5 - The Hatchetfish - That hatchetfish is a small deep sea fish found in the warmer waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans at a depth greater than 4,000 feet. It gets its name from the shape of its body, whose silver colored thorax resembles that of a hatchet. Parts of the body are also transparent which allows it to confuse its prey through the use of bioluminescent photophores. Their extremely large eyes allow them to see the faintest light and focus on objects both near and far. They can grow up to 5 inches in length.\rbr\rbr4 - The Angler Fish - The Angler fish is one of the more unique fish you will ever see. It is a deep sea fish, known for a luminescent protrusion (or fishing rod) that comes out of its head that it uses as a lure in its dark, deep sea environment. Females also use this to lure males during mating season. These carnivorous fish have large heads that contain an enormous jaw filled with razor sharp fang like teeth. The teeth are also angled inward, to make sure no prey escapes their mouth. It can distend its jaw and stomach to allow it to swallow prey up to twice its size. They can grow to be over three feet long and also weigh up to 100 pounds.\rbr\rbr3 – The Broadnosed Chimaera (KI-MARA)- The Broadnose Chimaera is a deep water fish that can be found throughout the Atlantic at depths over 4,000 feet. It has a long narrow, pointed snout, for which it gets its name. It appears as white or light brown with narrow pectoral fins. It can grow to be 4 feet long. A better name for it might be the enigma fish because very little is known about its behavior, feeding habits, population, and breeding. It occasionally shows up in deep water fishing nets, which is believed to be how the species was first discovered.\rbr\rbr2 - Giant Spider Crab - The giant spider crab, also known as the Japanese spider crab or tall-footed crab, is a species native to the waters in and around Japan and has the largest leg span of any crab, measuring 12 feet from claw to claw. The body can grow to a size of 16” across and it can live in depths of up to 2,000 feet, often near vent holes. Despite its fearsome appearance, the crabs are quite docile and use camouflage and their armored exoskeletons to help protect them from larger predators like the octopus. They will even add sponges and other animals to its shell in order to further blend in with its surroundings. \rbr\rbr1 - Vampire Squid – The Vampire Squid is a small deep-sea squid that can be found in and around tropical oceans across the world at depths of up to ten thousand feet. Oxygen is scarce at that depth, but the vampire squid is able to breathe the available oxygen at saturations of only 3. In order to see its eyes need to be very large, so large that they are proportionately bigger than any other animal. Its body is covered in light producing organs called photophores, which enables it to produce disorienting flashes of light for several minutes in order to escape predators. Rather than feasting on blood of its prey, the vampire squid ually eats detritus and the remains of zooplankton. It gets its name from its red eyes, dark color, and cape like webbing that encompasses its 8 legs.
