It attrs objects made of nickel, iron and cobalt.\rbr\rbrA magnet has 2 poles, the North Pole and the South Pole. Opposite poles of 2 magnets always attr each other, i.e. the North pole of one magnet and the south pole of another magnet will always attr each other. Like poles of two magnets always repel each other. Two North Poles of magnets can never get attred to each other, they will always repel one another.\rbr\rbrThe Earth also behaves like a magnet. The North Pole of the Earths magnet is in the geographical South and the south pole of the Earths magnet is in the geographical North. Since opposite poles attr, a freely suspended magnet always rests in the North South direction as the North Pole of the magnet is attred by the geographical North Pole, i.e. the South Pole of the Earths magnet.
