The Outer Banks are no stranger to extreme weather but the sight of ice shoves jutting up against a dock in Duck, North Carolina, on Wednesday, made for a startling scene.

A Nor’easter storm bearing down on the East Coast provided the powerful winds and low temperatures needed to form the ice shoves. Footage captured by Simon Kaufman shows pressure from the shifting ice rattling pilings in the dock outside the Blue Point restaurant.

“The scale was immense. Four inch thick ice crashing into the Blue Point pier when the wind picked up over the Currituck Sound. We first noticed it when the pilings were bouncing around like mad, so we rushed in to check it out before dinner service,” said Kaufman, in an email to Storyful. Credit: Simon Kaufman via Storyful
