 A veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan received the world's first total penis and scrotum transplant. 
According to a recent release from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the 14-hour procedure was performed in late March by a "team of nine plastic surgeons and two urological surgeons."  "We are hopeful that this transplant will help restore near-normal urinary and sexual functions for this young man," W.P. Andrew Lee, the school's director of plastic and reconstructive surgery, commented. While functionality restorations can sometimes be achieved with reconstructions and implants, the patient did not have enough remaining tissue to make either a viable option.  Thus far, the individual who underwent the procedure has recovered well and noted, "When I first woke up, I felt finally more normal… [with] a level of confidence as well. Confidence…like finally I'm okay now."
