This castle, situated on an island in the middle of Loch Leven, was a prison to Mary, Queen of Scots for a year in 1567-68. A month after arriving at the castle, she suffered a miscarriage of twins. On 24 July 1567, she was forced to abdicate in favour of her infant son, James VI, later James I of England. On 2 May 1568, with the help of boatman Willie Douglas, she did indeed find a boat that could carry two and made her escape. But within a fortnight she found herself in exile in England.
