A large plume of black smoke billowed from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Friday, May 4, following an magnitude-6.9 earthquake.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, the strongest in Hawaii since 1975, took place near Leilani Estates. Eruptions followed and lava was still spurting from fissures on Saturday. At least five homes had been destroyed, Hawaii News Now reported. Credit: Riccardo Valeriani via Storyful
