Business Insider reports that the Trump administration will not be reuniting migrant children with parents who are being held in detention facilities. This according to a cabinet secretary.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday that the administration will only reunite separated children with parents who are granted asylum or agree to drop their claims for asylum. Those who drop their claims will subsequently be deported.
Another issue is that parents who continue with their asylum claims will be held in custody until their hearings are complete. That process can take months or in some cases years. Azar added that the department could place children with relatives in the United States if these family members can be properly vetted.
