Large waves struck tourist beaches in Bali on July 25, flooding hotels, holiday villas and streets of resort towns.

The waves, which reports said were the biggest swells in years and reached up to 20 feet in height in some areas, hit Bali’s southern shores, including Kuta, Sanur, Legian, Gianyar and Nusa Dua.

The popular Kuta Beach, where swells reached 13 feet, was temporarily closed on July 25 and swimming was prohibited, local media reports said.

Ferry services between Bali Island and Nusa Penida, and also between Bali and Gili Islands, in Lombok, were suspended.

This video, shared on July 25, shows large waves flooding Kuta Beach and knocking down a drink vendor’s stall.

The high swells reaching 20 feet have affected the southern coast of Java to Nusa Tenggara, said an official at the Denpasar office of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency. Credit: ayubzihard via Storyful
