The roads surrounding the 37 West Apartment blocks in Lynchburg, Virginia, were submerged on August 2 following heavy rain that threatened the collapse of a nearby dam.

The National Weather Service said the College Lake Dam, near Lynchburg, was “above capacity” and that there was some uncontrolled flow from it. The Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services said the threat of the dam failing caused evacuations for residents in the Blackwater Creek Trail area.

Authorities extended the flash flood warning for the city until at least 11.30 am on August 3. Later during the day, officials said the water levels were “currently stable” and there was no “immediate fear” of the structure collapsing. CNN reported. Credit: Jessi Hughes via Storyful
