Terrified Tourists Flee Gili Islands After Lombok Earthquake

pA 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the Indonesian island of Lombok killed at least 142 peoplea and injured hundreds more on Sunday, August 5.ppThis video shows hundreds of people being evacuated from the Gili Islands, an archipelago near northwest Lombok, on Monday, August 6, after the earthquake.ppPosting the videos on Twitter, British tourist Helen Brady, a writer from Manchestera, described the evacuation process as “chaos”.ppMeanwhile national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said three ships were used to transfer about 1,000 people from the islands to safetya, local news site Detik News reporteda. No casualties were reported.ppThe earthquake sparked a tsunami warning which was later cancelled, the Jakarta Post reporteda. Nugroho said thousands of buildings had been damaged, according to the report. The earthquake also impacted the neighboring island of Bali with minor damage reported at Ngurah Rai International Airport.ppDozens were killed in a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Lombok on July 29.
