James Comey on Thursday released an op-ed in the New York Times.

Former FBI Director James Comey, who President Trump recently called a "bad cop," said in a New York Times op-ed that he hopes the president is "not impeached and removed from office before the end of his term."
"Because if Mr. Trump were removed from office by Congress, a significant portion of this country would see this as a coup, and it would drive those people farther from the common center of American life, more deeply fracturing our country," Comey added.
"Critics of Mr. Trump should hope for something much harder to distort, or to nurse as a grievance, than an impeachment," Comey continued in the op-ed released Thursday. "We need a resounding election result in 2020...to show that [Americans] are united by something even more important: the belief that the president of the United States cannot be a chronic liar who repeatedly attacks the rule of law."
While Comey and Trump have frequently traded barbs, the president would agree he should not be impeached, though for different reasons.
"How do you impeach a president who has won perhaps the greatest election of all time, done nothing wrong (no Collusion with Russia, it was the Dems that Colluded), had the most successful first two years of any president, and is the most popular Republican in party history 93%?" he tweeted in January.   In another tweet, he wrote: "The Economy is one of the best in our history, with unemployment at a 50 year low, and the Stock Market ready to again break a record (set by us many times) - & all you heard yesterday, based on a phony story, was Impeachment. You want to see a Stock Market Crash, Impeach Trump!"
