Xi-Kim Meeting, Unspoken Agenda: Analysis Frank Januzzi CEO of Mansfield Foundation

Chinese President Xi Jinping's first state visit to North Korea in his six-and-a-half years as leader of that country. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's first time hosting Mr. Xi after traveling four times to China to come face to face with his Chinese counterpart.br The visit, many experts view as a last-minute put together as both seek breakthroughs in their negotiating binds with the U.S.br Kim, Xi Summit and a series of summit diplomacy waiting to happen in the next few weeks. Let's get an in-depth analysis. Joining me live Frank Jannuzi, President and CEO of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation... an international affairs policy expert who has advised Joe Biden, John Kerry and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.br Frank Januzzi, thank you for joining us this morning.br br Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un wasted no time to sit down for a bilateral summit. They went right to it just hours after Mr. Xi's arrival in Pyeongyang.br We've learned that Kim signaled a willingness to compromise in stalled nuclear talks with the U.S. while Xi pledged assistance for North Korea's efforts to ensure its own security and development.br Have the two gained the leverage that they were seeking on U.S. President Trump?br br There have been forecasts that the summit would produce very little outwardly - perhaps something just routine... which appears to be the case from what we've seen so far.br What are some key observation points that we may be able to see AND those that won't be on explicit display? For instance, what kind of give and takes do you think the two leaders exchanged - particularly judging from the Chinese team that's accompanied Xi?br br The Kim, Xi summit yesterday kicks off a series of summits in the next few weeks. How do you expect Xi Jinping to use this new North Korea card when he sits down with the U.S. president... especially on the G20 stage where we expect a flurry of summit diplomacy to take place, as well.br br How does this trip by Xi to Pyeongyang and the messages of support for the North's Kim he's been delivering change the nuclear diplomacy equation in this part of the world? Is Kim Jong-un returning to dialogue? Will this impact the Presidents Moon Jae-in and Donald Trump meeting in Seoul set to take place after the G20?br br Frank Jannuzi, President and CEO of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, many, many thanks for speaking with us today. We appreciate it.
