Gonzaga, Cagayan Mayor Carlito Pentecostes Jr. was shot dead by suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels during the flag-raising ceremony at the town hall Monday. Pentecostes died on the spot. His two bodyguards were also killed in the shooting incident. Police said after the attack, the assailants left leaflets containing messages criticizing the black sand mining operations in the province.
