Singapore haze worst in three years as Indonesian slash-and-burn fires continue

Singapore is blanketed by a thick haze created by smoke drifting in from forest fires burning in neighbouring Indonesia.  On September 14, 2019, air quality in the city state deteriorated to a level considered “unhealthy” for the first time in three years, according to Singapore’s National Environment Agency. Fire is a common and cheap method used to clear forest areas and open land for palm oil plantations.
