North Korea announced on October 2, 2019 that it had successfully test-fired a new type of submarine-launched ballistic missile. The missile test was launched from Wonsan, a city in Kangwon province on North Korea’s east coast, and flew towards the Sea of Japan.  Japan officials said the missile split into two pieces after the launch, with one reaching its economic exclusive zone.
