New Year’s Eve protests in Hong Kong

Hong Kong rang in the new year with muted celebrations and anti-government protesters taking to the streets across the city, while police were out in force to prevent chaos. There were sporadic incidents of roads being blocked and petrol bombs thrown, and police fired tear gas, used a water cannon and pepper spray to disperse crowds.
