Evergreen French mayor, 97, targets tenth term in office

"You can be stupid at 20 and fit at 98, it (age) doesn't mean anything": Almost 98 years old, Marcel Berthomé is France's oldest mayor. But far from looking forward to a rest he is, despite some local opposition, stubbornly running for a tenth consecutive term in his stronghold of Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle. Berthomé has been mayor of the Gironde town's 3,200 inhabitants since 1971. But while he has no intention of quitting, local rival Jean-Marc Sallaberry calls him a "dictator" who has made a "mess" of the town.
