China Is Expanding Its 'Reeducation' Camps in Xinjiang

XINJIANG, CHINA — Recent satellite footage and other evidence show that China is expanding its network of camps in Xinjiang. UN experts and activists say these camps hold at least 1 million people, mostly non-ethnnic Chinese Muslims.br br The Australian Strategic Policy Institute has identified and mapped more than 380 suspected detention facilities in Xinjiang, where mostly Uyghur minorities are being held in a forced assimilation campaign. br br The think tank published its findings in a September report entitled "Documenting Xinjiang's Detention System."br br The report contradicts claims by Chinese officials that most people sent to detention centers have "returned to society."br br Asked at a briefing in Beijing in July of 2019, Reuters reports Xinjiang's vice chairman, Alken Tuniaz, said, "Currently, most people who have received training have already returned to society, returned home.
