This Day in History:, The First Groundhog Day.br February 2, 1887.br Groundhog Day was celebrated br for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob br in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.br Tradition has it that if a groundhog comes br out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, .br it runs back into its br burrow predicting br six more weeks of winter.br No shadow means br an early spring.br In 1887, a newspaper editor declared that Phil, br the Punxsutawney groundhog, was America’s br only true weather-forecasting groundhog.br The line of groundhogs br that have since been br known as Phil are America’s br most famous marmots.
