This Day in History:, FDR Signs the Beer br and Wine Revenue Act.br March 22, 1933.br After 14 years of Prohibition, the Beer and Wine Revenue br Act finally allowed the sale and government taxation of br alcoholic beverages with no more than 3.2 alcohol.br The act was part of FDR's New Deal, br a series of economic measures intended br to pull America out of The Great Depression.br It was one of his first actions as president.br Its passage signaled the repeal of the br 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act, br which prohibited the sale of alcohol in the U.S.br While a victory for the powerful temperance br movement, Prohibition increased illegal trafficking br of alcohol. It had little effect on its consumption.
