Oakland Launches Basic Incomebr Pilot Program: $500 in Guaranteedbr Income to 600 Families.br On Tuesday, Mayor Libby Schaaf tookbr to Twitter to announce the launch of br “Oakland Resilient Families" in Oakland, California.br The pilot program will provide guaranteed incomebr to 600 families in the form of $500 a month. .br According to Schaaf, the program will span 18 monthsbr and benefit Black, Indigenous and other people of color. .br In a video message, Schaaf said she believesbr guaranteed income is the “most transformative policy”br to achieve their “vision” of a closed racial wealth gap. .br Our vision is an Oakland that has closedbr the racial wealth gap and where all familiesbr thrive, … we believe that guaranteedbr income is the most transformative policybr to achieve this vision and whose timebr has come. We believe poverty is notbr personal failure, it is policy failure, Libby Schaaf, via 'Complex'.br “Oakland Resilient Families” will be open to allbr residents, including undocumented people.br Households are eligible if theybr have at least one child underbr 18 years old and are earningbr at or below 50 percent of thebr area's median income. .br 300 spots in the program will bebr reserved for “very-low-income families”br that earn $30,000 or less annually.
